Manteo Has Shopping,Festival's,And A July Celebration.
Manteo is a town in Dare county North Carolina.The population is a thousand or so,until summer hits.Then it is a good bit more.You can see more than that in one day. It is located on the north central area of Roanoke Island.We love to ride over to Roanoke Island from Nags Head and shop,and look around. About every year we head over to the North Carolina Aquarium.We never get tired of going there.How about you?If this is your first time of going to the Outer Banks don,t miss this.It is easy to find and if you have little ones they will love it. Ever since our first trip to the Outer Banks,I have all ways told people that it is so easy to find your way around.With the ocean on one side,and the sound on the other,it is a straight shot,hard to get lost(which I can do). Did you know that the town was named for a Native American named Manteo?He was from the Croatan tribe.He had been civilized by the English during a trip to London in 1584,where he and another native"Wanchese"became the liaison between the settlers and the Indians. That may be the reason that after John White brought one hundred and fifty colonists over to Roanoke Island and returning three years later,they were all gone.They may have had a hard winter and Manteo talked them in to going to Hatteras where the Croatan,s lived.(My Hatteras page tells more about them). Maneto,"the town"was named the seat of government for Dare County in 1870.Their most famous resident today is Andy Griffith who lives with his wife Cindi on a secluded compound on the north eastern shore of Roanoke Island.Below is Andy,Barney,and Gomer on the Andy Griffth show.
They are not quite like the Outer Banks.Manteo is more like a little city.The streets are like back home with some older houses and a lot of trees,real nice.It would be a great place for a vacation.
There are all kind of things to do.I will list a few.If you are taking a vacation in the summer months you may be able to catch these. The first is "Dare Day".It is an annual celebration for the people of Dare county.The festival is free and open to all residents and visitors.There is a variety of entertainment,food,and,shopping,with all activities in walking distance.It is held on the first Saturday of June. Once again if you have read anything on these pages then you know I love to eat out.My wife made me this way. We have a fall festival every year at home(population 5000)and we know how much fun these festivals are. The second is "Independence Day".Every year on July 4,they hold an Independence Day celebration.During the day there are an array of contests,games,and tounaments,and in the evening a fire works display. If you have ever been to the Outer Banks you know how beautiful the fire works are,the sky stays lit up. One other is the "New World Festival" of the arts,held on the Manteo water front.It is a great exhibition that features over 80 selected artists displaying and selling their work.It is a two day out door art show that has been held for over 23 years.
