Lets Find Kill Devil Hills History,And A few things To Do And Places To Stay.

Did you ever wonder how Kill Devil Hills got its name? How about Kitty Hawk,or Nags Head.We stay there, and I don't think I had ever heard of that name before. And if you Google that name,it pulls it up instantly, goes no other place. But it is a beautiful place to take your vacation at.

Even with all of the other romantic and striking names in the Outer Banks,Kill Devil Hill stays a little longer in our imagination.

One legend has it that the sand dune, where the Wright Brothers revolutionized transportation, was named after the wretched-tasting "Kill-Devil Rum",that may have washed up in barrels from shipwrecks in early Colonial days.

(In early days there were these thugs called "Bankers".They took donkeys and tied lighted torches around their necks, and walked them up and down the beaches. When boats came in,they saw the lights, thought it was other boats, and when they tried to come closer, they ran aground. Then their cargo was captured. Another legend has, that KDH got its name after a rogue called Devil Ike,who blamed the theft of ship wrecked cargo on the Devil, whom he claimed to have chased to the hills and killed.

Another local lore tells of an Outer Banker, who atop one of the dunes, tried to kill the Devil he had traded his soul to,for a bag of gold.

How it realy got its name is most likely forgotten. But when we stay there,I still think about the name.Every where on the Outer Banks is loaded with history.Kitty Hawk,Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head are sandwiched together, about like Avon,Waves,Rodanthe, and Salvo,in Hateras. Despite bigger, and more amenities on the rest of the Outer Banks, they remain a family oriented beach for visitors, and moderately priced housing for the guys that live there permanently.

If you want information on a rental, such as a house or a hotel, you will find that on the other pages,at the bottom of this page. What with two hundred and fifty houses and condo rentals and ten or so hotels, these guys can give you much more info. Here is a condo that I found. Just a few things you will find to excite you in Kill Devil Hills are, kiteflying, surfing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, sunbathing, air flight tours, and tons of stores to shop at."Now that excites my wife and daughter".Of course,my Son-In-Law,Grandson,and I,like the many restaurants.

With hotels, motels, house rentals,Churches, and schools, this makes Kill Devil Hill a top choice for many.

I was telling my wife about how nice the condo was I was looking at,and what a great looking kitchen it had,and she made a face.It seems she hates kitchens, she tells me she is a outgoing cook, whatever that means.

If you decide to vacation in KDH,don't miss going to the Wright Brothers National Memorial.Although Kill Devil Hills offers a lot of history, don't forget about traditional family fun(most little ones care very little about history),they just want to have fun,and I can not blame them. Here is just a short list of things to do.One is the Colington speedway. They have three tracks,to please kids of most every age.We road the gokarts a few years ago on the beach rode and my wife is only five feet tall. Her feet would not reach the petals, and they put her in one of the little cars.(Got a picture of that).

Another is Professor Hacker,s Lost Treasure Golf. They have thirty six holes complemented with water falls, dinosaur footprints, lost treasure, and a mining train that takes you to the first hole,"wet and wild bumper boats"My daughter takes our grandson there a lot.He loves it.

I am running out of room but you will find plenty of entertainment. On the Hotels, and House rental pages you will find more info.Twenty Five years ago we have good friends that painted such a pretty picture of the Outer Banks,we had to go see for ourself.I am sure glad we did.Have fun in OBX.
