Ocracoke North Carolina "Quiet,And Beautiful"
The island of Ocracoke North Carolina,is a part of the Outer Banks that stretches for two hundred miles.If you have vacationed there,you know that it is one of the most remote islands on the Outer Banks. It can be reached by one of three ways.You can take a ferry(free on Hatteras side)or a paid one on the other end of Ocracoke,then travel on up the coast.We have never traveled that way,but my daughter said a friend of hers went on in to Myrtle Beach from Ocracoke once. "While I think of it,if you want information on the Outer Banks,no matter what part,or for that matter,any beach in the United States,go to Wikipedia,the free Encyclopedia,and you can find something on it." You can also take your private boat over to Ocracoke,and if you are fortunate enough to have a plane,you can land on their airstrip. There is a fourth way,you can swim,I thought about it,but everyone would have thought I was showing off.(HA)Below is the ferry,you can see the cars on it.It's a whole lot bigger than it looks in the picture.
Like I said earlier,they have a airport where small aircraft can land.Did you know that years ago the well to do that owned airplanes,landed them near Anchorage Inn and taxied up to the hotel.Pretty neat wasn't it?Below is the Inn.
Other than the village of Ocracoke North Carolina,and a few other areas such as the campground,a place for the ponys,and the airstrip,the rest of the island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.Hatteras Island is part of it to.(Great fishing there in the fall.) One two lane road runs from the village at the southern end to the ferry dock at the northern tip.It is easy to travel. 
The village of Ocracoke North Carolina is located around a small harbor called"Silver Lake"The next smaller residential area is built around quite a lot of man made canals. Ocracoke village is built at the widest point of the island.The only thing that protects them from the Atlantic Ocean is a salt marsh,and sand dunes.That is the reason you see many buildings on pilings,so the ocean will not flood them. Ocracoke North Carolina is a beautiful quite place to vacation at.Don't forget to stop at the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum and gift shop below.They will enlighten you on everything you need to know to make your visit a good one.

You know Ocracoke North Carolina is where the bad dude Blackbeard"above" lived,as well as other places that he had homes at.He probably had women at all of them.He had 14 women he married.
You know that Ocracoke has the famous ponies to.The ponies are an important part of the islands history.So they are well taken care of.No one knows for sure how they got there,but it is believed that they swim ashore to escape spanish ships that sank when they ran on sand bars. They were once used as work animals and also by coast guard for beach patrol.The Ocracoke North Carolina ponys are different from others in that they have seventeen instead of eighteen ribs,and five lumbar vertebrae instead of six,and also unusual size and color. A few years ago,you probably remember reading about the pony round up they used to have,I saw one in Va that a man was taking back to its owner.I remember it being a very pretty pony.
Ocracoke North Carolina used to be a fishing village,but after the creation of Silver Lake Harbor in 1931,it changed to tourism,what you see today.
Today they have a school "left" for K12 grades,and a grocery store.It wasn't long ago that they had to go to the mainland to do their shopping.(No WalMarts there.)
Many of the permanent residents own gift shops,B&B Inns,Lakeside Cottages,seafood restaurants and charter fishing companies.When you get 40,000 or so tourists a year,that is a lot of people to take care of. If you visit or vacation there you will find the people to be the friendliest,and pleasant around.Ocracoke has been named one of the top ten beaches in American.We went to Myrtle beach a while back and Ocracoke is 360 degrees from them.A vacation to Ocracoke would probably lower ones blood preasure a few points,with the surroundings they have.
