Ocracoke can be reached from Hatteras by ferry.It takes about forty minutes to arrive there.Arrive at the"free"ferry early,if you plan on coming at peak tourist season. The island is 16 miles long,and width is from about a half mile wide to two miles wide.The widest part is where the village is located.Also,the island and the village are named the same. They offer the perfect location for a retreat. With long stretches of unspoiled beaches where magnificent sunrises and sunsets splash wondrous colors across the Atlantic Ocean, this island provides the nurturing beauty of Mother Nature at her finest. The Island provides opportunities for moonlight gatherings on the sand, for running barefoot up the sand dunes, for gazing across marshes, and meandering through the woodlands of this sleepy little island hideaway. Free time can be spent exploring the little village, going for leisurely walks along the beach, going deep-sea fishing, watching the wild ponies and birds galore, renting bicycles for exploring, touring the island's nineteenth century lighthouse, and whatever else the island and ocean offer. The population of this little island is centered in the village,located around Silver Lake,one of the best small harbors anywhere.The outlet to Silver Lake,is into the sound.The lake is about a quarter of a mile wide,and forms a circle. The scenery on the drive,after you leave the ferry,is an interesting one.But,if you like to fly,you can charter a plane at Beaufort,and fly up to the banks of Ocracoke in about fourty minutes.Hundreds of private planes land there each year. Again,if you want to get around without walking,Beach Outfitters will rent you a bike or the most popular way,scooters.(252-928-6261)Call and have everything you need,when you arrive there.They also have bikes for adults,and children,linens,baby equipment,beach gear,TVS,DVD players,and grills.Adult bikes can be outfitted with child trailers,and baby seats.The best part is a free delivery,and pickup,on orders over fifty dollars.They leave no rock unturned. Water sports are popular such as surfing,kite boarding,and kayaking.Also,they have great sport fishing,and surf fishing.Boating,beach combing,sun bathing,swimming,and if none of that appeals to you,just read a good book,with all of the peacefulness around you,it would be easy. And if all of the above doesn't appeal to you,then you can take a nap in a hammock,"works for me",how about you?After that,go to Howards Pub and Raw Bar.They specialize in fresh seafood,burgers,steaks,and more. I'll never forget the first time our friends took us there.We walked the quiet streets,and went in the shops.I had never visited a place so quiet.Stop for a ice cream cone to. They have excellent beaches,warm southern waters,perfect for swimming,and fishing.They offer a great place for quality family time.They have a slow pace,and warm hospitality,and that makes for a peaceful,restful,and relaxing vacation.
