Salvo Is Another Quite Little Town On The Outer Banks to Spend Your Vacation At.
Salvo North Carolina,is a sleepy little village on the Outer Banks,so don't expect to much.
Lodgeing can be tight in summer, especially on weekends, even with a large supply of motel rooms, rental houses, and rental cottages. The towns of Rodanthe,Waves, and SalvoNC run together,(Like Kitty Hawk,Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head),forming a relatively continuous stretch about five miles long.
While they are the southernmost town of the tri-village community, they do not simply blend in with Waves, but have a distinct character and tone. A slower and very relaxed area, they have a true local feel. They are mostly a residential community. Like many of the Outer Banks towns,Salvo was not always called such.It was known as Clarksville until the beginning of the twentieth century when a post office was built and the name changed.
Even more than a century later the post office still stands on NC Highway 12,a small white structure with blue and red trim (in patriotic decor). The local post office now resides in Waves, but the small building reminds locals and visitors of a quieter time.
I looked at the post office, and it probably is eight feet by ten feet square.I think there is a smaller one in Flordia. We pass by on our way to Ocracoke. We have visited, but have never rolled out our sleeping bags.
If relaxation and peace is what you're in the mood for, you'll find it here. The beauty of the area abounds with white sandy beaches, beautiful blue waters and many sand hills.Wildlife also abounds. You can watch the birds as they search for breakfast out on the calm seas.
Or jump right in the ocean, and find an adventure of your own with Kite boarding, and wind surfing, the area's famous for that. Rent a canoe and explore the wildlife and beauty of the Sound. Grab a fishing pole and find a spot to spend your day catching fish, crabs and more.
Unspoiled land to the south ensures you can enjoy a day on the beach, and not see anyone for miles.(You know how someone will say, they are having a bad day.Well, there is no way you can say that,if you vacation in Salvo.)If you like things quite and peaceful, this is it.
The small villages of Salvo, Waves, and Rodanthe are well represented in the National Register of Historic Places. Rodanthe is home of the world famous Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station.Don't miss seeing it.
A little of what you will find in the way of shopping is,the Blue Whale. They have the usual beach items, such as T-Shirts,groceries,beach supplies, and the unusual, such as gourmet coffees, and hot sauces.they also import beer, and wine, and specializes in jams, jellies, and salad dressing. Some of their jams, and jellies on hot Bisuits with butter are hard to beat.Crafts are also sold here.
If you are planning on fishing(like myself),there is the Fishing Hole, best known as a general tackle shop. They have got beach supplies and groceries as well.
Pea Island Art Gallery is also in Salvo. The Gallery represents local and regional artists.
Since they are so close to Waves and Rodanthe, house rentals, shopping and that beautiful beach run together. For an out of towner, you would not know when you left one,and entered the other.
Next door to them, you can find the Island Convenience Store in Rodanthe, the Surf Shop,The Reef, all of them stocking everything you need for the beach.
Another is Ocean Gourmet and gifts, with fresh fudge, ice cream and candy, just in case you have a sweet tooth.
Then there is the Home Port Gifts,in Waves. They are one of the loveliest upscale gift shops on the Outer Banks, feauturing original artwork, crafts, and exquisite jewelry in fine silver, and 14-karat gold. The wife loves this. They also have much more, including Tiffany style stained glass.
So as not to bore you to much, this is a great place to spend one's vacation.I will tell you about one more place you won't want to miss.
If you shop, don't miss this one.The Fisherman's Daughter.Just some of their merchandise is,clothing and swimwear by Vix,Vera Bradley"My Daughter is in love with the handbags.",and many other name brands, plus their Pandora Jewelry.Upstairs is their gift and souvener area.
And this is just a few.You just cannot visit every shop.Although Salvo is small, all of the other towns have everything you could possibilty need.Salvo NC is a great place to take a vacation.
If you are planning to vacation in the fall, book early, because when the big blues and drum start biting, these small towns will be booked up.Hope you found what you were looking for.Have fun,and be careful on your Outer Banks vacation.
